Polyscias scutellaria 'Fabian' profile

  • Plant type: Woody tropical Araliaceae with a compact trunked indoor-tree form.
  • Growth habit: Stout trunk with a dense crown of rounded leaves.
  • Leaves: Rounded foliage that can show darker undersides.
  • New growth: Young leaves can show warmer reddish tones before maturing.
  • Conditions: Stable warmth, bright filtered light and careful watering.
  • Placement: A settled position reduces stress after acclimation.

Trunk and crown development in Polyscias scutellaria 'Fabian'

Polyscias scutellaria grows as a wet-tropical shrub or small tree and has a cultivated tropical background from East Malesia to the south-west Pacific. In the 'Fabian' form, the trunk and rounded leaf crown define the container-grown shape.

The woody stem holds the plant’s structure, while the leaves respond quickly to stress. A sudden move, cold air or a wet root zone can cause shedding even when the trunk remains firm.

Care for Polyscias scutellaria 'Fabian'

  • Light: Bright filtered light keeps the crown denser and reduces weak stretched growth.
  • Watering: Water after the upper substrate has dried slightly, then allow the pot to drain fully.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity keeps rounded leaves from drying at the edges.
  • Temperature: Keep consistently warm and protect from cold windows or draughts.
  • Substrate: Use a well-drained mix with enough structure around the woody root system.
  • Pruning: Remove weak or crossing shoots to maintain a clean crown shape.
  • Acclimation: Expect some leaf adjustment after transport; stable care is more important than frequent changes.

Troubleshooting Polyscias scutellaria 'Fabian'

  • Leaf drop: Cold, movement or uneven watering can cause the crown to shed leaves.
  • Yellowing: Wet substrate around the roots can lead to yellow leaves and weak shoots.
  • Dry edges: Drought stress or very dry air can brown leaf margins.
  • Pests: Scale, mealybugs and spider mites can settle around stems and leaf bases.
  • Soft trunk: A soft or darkening trunk can point to advanced rot from prolonged wetness.

Safety for Polyscias scutellaria 'Fabian'

Keep Polyscias scutellaria 'Fabian' away from pets and children that may chew the foliage. Ingested plant material can cause irritation and digestive discomfort.

Botanical notes on Polyscias scutellaria

At least they are sterile
These are funny being advertised as dermaplane because they are packaged as scalpels. The 5 scalpels are individually wrapped, and labeled sterile. As the price indicates, they are on the cheap side. Which is fine, they work, but they aren’t terribly sharp so you have to scrape a bit harder than preferred. For dermaplaning I prefer the schick ones as they have tiny serrations which cut the hair better than anything else I have found so far.
