Why Designers Choose the Julian Rectangle

The Julian Rectangle is the premier choice for professionals looking to maximize impact in narrow spaces. While a cube anchors a corner, this rectangular trough defines a line. If you have ever seen a standard plastic or resin trough "bow" or "belly" outward after being filled with soil, you will recognize the necessity of the Julian’s industrial-grade construction. It is designed to be a permanent, design-forward extension of your architecture.

In professional settings, these are most often used as "living walls" to create privacy between restaurant tables or to frame the perimeter of a rooftop deck. Because the 12" width is so slim and the Matte Black finish so sophisticated, the Julian Rectangle creates a clear boundary without sacrificing floor space. It anchors the environment, allowing your greenery to create a lush, vertical curtain.

The Science: Why Steel-Reinforcement Matters for Rectangle Planters

Longer planters are particularly susceptible to "bellying"—a phenomenon where the weight of heavy, wet soil forces the long side-walls to bulge outward. This ruins the crisp, architectural silhouette. To prevent this, NMN Designs integrates internal steel reinforcement into the Julian Rectangle.

This engineering ensures that even when housing a dense row of plants, the walls remain perfectly plumb and vertical. Combined with our commercial-grade fiberglass, you get a vessel that handles extreme thermal expansion (from scorching summers to sub-zero winters) without the cracking or brittleness found in standard retail pots.

Recommended Plant Pairings for the 30" Julian:

The 12" depth of the Julian requires a thoughtful selection of root-compatible plants. We recommend the following for health, aesthetics, and performance:

For Privacy and Height (Narrow Profile Specialists):

  • Sky Pencil Holly: The gold standard for 12" troughs. Its naturally columnar shape stays narrow and vertical without needing heavy pruning, providing a "living wall" effect.

  • Blue Arrow Juniper: A stunning, silvery-blue evergreen that is much more drought-tolerant and narrow-root-compatible than traditional Arborvitae.

For High-Contrast Color:

  • Red Star Cordyline: Features deep burgundy, sword-like leaves that look striking against the Matte Black finish.

  • Golden Creeping Jenny (as a "Spiller"): Plant these at the edges to create a vibrant, lime-green "waterfall" of foliage that pops against the dark fiberglass.

For Extreme Temperatures (Heat, Wind, and Frost):

  • Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass: Virtually "bulletproof." It handles sub-zero winters and scorching summers with ease. Its tall, wheat-like stalks provide privacy and movement in the wind.

  • Green Mountain Boxwood: Extremely cold-hardy and classic. It can be easily maintained to fit the 12" width and provides a structured, formal look year-round.

Pro-Tips for the Best Results

  • High-Wind Stability: For exposed roof decks or coastal balconies, add 3 inches of heavy gravel at the base before adding soil. This lowers the center of gravity, ensuring your privacy screen stays upright during heavy gusts.

  • Thermal Protection: While the fiberglass is frost-proof, using an insulated liner inside the planter in extreme northern climates can help protect the root balls of perennial plants, ensuring they return season after season.

A Highly Anticipated Revelation Commentary!
Format: Hardcover
Tom Schreiner is one of my favorite New Testament Bible commentators. Having used his Romans commentary (now in its second edition), as well as his commentaries on 1 Corinthians and 1-2 Peter and Jude, I recommend him highly! I read much of his shorter commentary on Revelation in the ESV Expository Commentary series, and found it to be a wonderful help to get my bearings on this challenging book. This full length Baker commentary I have been anticipating for several years and finally have gotten a copy. While I am not persuaded of his rather novel (and newly held!) view on the Millenium, called New Creation Millenialism, I find his basic approach to the book a wonderful antidote to both the more Dispensational and the more preterist approaches to the book. Schreiner's arguments that Revelation is highly symbolic and recursive (non-linear/recapitulatory) I have found extremely persuasive and greatly affect how one reads the Apocalypse.

Wonderful exegetical commentary
Format: Hardcover
This replaces Grant Osborne's 2002 commetary on Revelation in the Baker series. The introduction is concise. The scholarship is inspring. The treatment of the seven letters to the seven churches is the best I've seen. Schreiner defends a premillenial view called "new creation" millenialism, which sees the thousand year reign of Christ and the saints as both an eschatological "sabbath" and also as the initial age of the New Heaven and Earth (eternity). In my opinion he does surpass Osborne on this subject, though Osborne's commentary remains outstanding in every way. Whatever your leanings on the millennium might be, Schreiner's excursus into that subject before treating Rev. 20 is as good as an excursus gets and worth the price of the book by itself. I found his resolutions of the major issues both compelling and uplifting. Buy it.

Technical in detail, but highly readable.
Format: Hardcover
This is an excellent commentary on Revelation alone or alongside other commentaries. Schreiner interacts with other scholars in the field, summarizing the interpretive options, and constantly reaches a theologically solid conclusion. You won't be disappointed!

Not great, not bad
Format: Hardcover
There are a few sections that are stand-outs. He's a pleasant writer, but over all not much new ground plowed.
