Introduction to the Herb

Rue, also known as Ruta graveolens, is a medicinal herb that has been cherished for centuries in traditional medicine. Often referred to as herb of grace, common rue, or garden rue, this plant is native to the Mediterranean region and is widely cultivated for its diverse medicinal and culinary properties. The rue plant’s leaves and seeds are rich in bioactive compounds, including alkaloids and coumarin derivatives, which contribute to its therapeutic effects. Rue extracts and rue oil have been traditionally used to address various health conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, and to stimulate uterine contractions. However, it’s important to note that large doses of rue can lead to severe adverse effects, including violent gastric pain and vomiting, underscoring the need for cautious use of this potent herb.

Product Overview

Rue is cherished for its aromatic leaves and striking blue-green foliage, making it a stunning centerpiece in herb gardens or ornamental landscapes. With its historical significance and traditional uses, this plant has been valued since ancient times for its medicinal properties and culinary applications.

Rue graveolens may reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, offering potential health benefits in treating stress-related conditions. Additionally, pruning the plant back to old wood in early spring is important to maintain its health and appearance.

Characteristics

The rue plant is a small, evergreen shrub that typically grows to a height and width of 2-3 feet. It features distinctive bluish-green, fern-like leaves that have a bitter taste and emit a strong aroma. During the summer, the plant produces small, yellow flowers in dense clusters, which are known for their high content of essential oil. Rue is a hardy plant that thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it a popular choice among gardeners. The leaves and seeds of the rue plant can be used both fresh and dried, serving various purposes in traditional medicine, cooking, and as a natural insect repellent. However, it’s crucial to handle the plant with care, as contact with its sap can cause phytophotodermatitis, a condition that mimics burn injury, and contact dermatitis.

Key Features:

Size:Each plant comes in a 1-gallon pot, ready to thrive in your garden.

Growth Habit: Rue grows up to 2 feet tall, featuring dense clusters of yellow flowers that bloom in summer. Despite its short lifespan of around five years, rue has the ability to self-seed and regenerate itself, making it a resilient addition to your garden.

Care Requirements: Prefers full sun and well-drained soil; drought-tolerant once established. When growing rue in containers, ensure you use a suitable container with drainage holes to prevent soil from becoming overly saturated.

Benefits:

Aromatic Qualities: The leaves emit a strong fragrance that can deter pests, making it a natural insect repellent for your garden.

Medicinal Uses: Traditionally used for its anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits; however, consult with a healthcare professional before use. Rue is also part of a broader category of medicinal plants known for their potential therapeutic benefits in managing health conditions like gastric infections and inflammation.

Culinary Uses: Adds a unique flavor to dishes; commonly used in Mediterranean cuisine.

Ecological Benefits: Rue serves as a host plant for several swallowtail butterflies and attracts various pollinators, contributing to its ecological importance in supporting local butterfly populations and other beneficial insects.

Caution:

Please handle rue with care. It is recommended to wear gloves when touching the plant, as its sap can cause skin irritation, especially when exposed to sunlight.

The rue plant is toxic and can pose serious health risks to humans and animals, including potential organ damage and severe gastrointestinal complications.

Additionally, rue is contraindicated during pregnancy due to its potential to stimulate uterine contractions and its properties as an abortifacient.

Symbolism and History

Rue has a rich history and deep symbolism that dates back to ancient times. In Mediterranean countries, the plant was revered as a symbol of grace and protection, often used in rituals and spells to ward off negative energy. The plant’s strong aroma and bitter taste were believed to have purifying properties, making it a popular choice for reducing swelling and promoting healing. In some cultures, rue was thought to possess cytotoxic activity and was used to treat various health conditions, including cancer. However, the plant’s potential for liver damage and toxicity highlights the need for caution when using it as a medicinal herb. Today, rue continues to be valued in traditional medicine, cooking, and as a natural product. When used in small amounts, it is generally considered safe and effective.

Fantabulous!
This is a fantastic and true re-publication of a classic favorite. The illustrations are great (though I wish they were in color), and the type-font and whole format were designed to make this a timeless heirloom, to be passed down the generations. I also learned the correct names of two of the eight reindeer were "Dunder" (not "Donner") and "Blixem" (not "Blitzen"). It shows that Candlewick Press took pains to make sure that what they were republishing was true and accurate to Clement Clark Moore's original work. Note that the name of the illustrator (Matt Tavares) is prominently acknowledged on the cover, though Moore's name is only mentioned in "A Note from the Illustrator", probably owing to the fact that Moore first published his poem anonymously. Still, I'm surprised that "they" did not include Moore's name on the cover. If you are looking to acquire a good, faithful, accurate and wonderfully illustrated version of this classic for your shelves, to be pulled at Christmas-time for reading and re-reading, this would be as good a copy (or perhaps better) than any.

Account of a Review from a St. Nicholas
I have been representing the spirit of St. Nicholas for children for the past 26 years. I have been everything from a Mall Santa to a part in a Christmas Program at our local church. About ten years ago, I started reading this story to the children of the local cops & firefighters fairly close to Christmas Eve each year from an old tattered children's book. I usually hosted this in my own living room until it got too large to do so. This year we opened that reading up to the community and filled the basement of our local library with children and their parents. I needed something to replace the old tattered children's book with and this fit the bill. The illustrations are beautiful and the words large enough to read in front of a group of children. I wish the pages were a little more robust as they are difficult to turn with white gloves on but that is minor. I cannot recommend this edition of the timeless story enough.

“Twas the Night before Christmas” illustrated by Matt Tavares
Format: Hardcover
Clement C. Moore - “Twas the Night before Christmas” is a perennial holiday favorite of mine. Matt Tavares’ monochrome illustrations are incredible! Mr. Tavares’ version remains true to the text within the original 1823 poem, ”A Visit from St. Nicholas”. As noted - two original reindeer names – Dunder and Blixem. I highly recommend Irish illustrator PJ Lynch 2021 version and American illustrator Matt Tavares 2022 version of Moore’s “Twas the Night before Christmas”.
